Mae is a prefix name, used in Burma, Laos and Thailand for female elephants, often for females who had babies. (Mae means mother)

Mae Lanna (Mae Loei) was born wild 1980-04-00.

Mae Loi means "Floating Elephant". Her name was changed to Mae Lanna.

She is 85% blind from work-related injuries, although the exact details of how she lost her sight are unknown. The funds for her rescue were donated by Nancy Abraham and Singer Rankin from World Women Work
