Comments / picturesOn the 8th April, 1976, Mr.Choochart Kalmapijit established Maesa Elephant Camp. At that time, the Thai government was anxious to develop Chiangmai Province for tourism. Initially, a 30 rai (12 acres) area was leased, and 6 elephants were rented from the local Karen hill-tribe people. Mae Sa was the first elephant camp certified by ISO 9001 version 2008.

In 2019, ownership of Maesa Elephant Camp, including the Maesa Elephant Nursery and Thai Elephant Care Center, was transferred to Mrs. Anchalee Bunarat Kalmapijit, the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Choochart Kalmapijit.

2022: The camp used to have 78 elephants but 22 have died in the past two years.

2024: 69 elephants.

The Chang Chiang Mai


Formerly known as the Thai Elephant Care Center, and renamed The Chang Chiang Mai in November, 2019. It is home to 14 elephants, mostly elderly, but with some younger ones too: 1. BanYen, 2. Boon Ma, 3. BuaKam, 4. Kam Muen, 5. Mae Kum, 6. Khun Pon, 7. Mai 1, 8. Moo 2, 9. Pornthip, 10.Mae Pupae, 11. Roilan, 12. Sao, 13. SomNeuk, 14. ThongTaWee.
