1991-08-04: Killed head keeper Roy Lock. An elephant killed a keeper at a British zoo with a head butt today while he was tending to its injured foot, zoo officials said. Roy Lock, 31 years old, poked his head through the bars of the elephant cage at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire when he was butted by the five-ton elephant, called Iris. His neck was broken against the cage bars. Seconds before, a colleague heard him saying to the 27-year-old elephant, "Let's have a look at your foot, old girl."

For most, if not all, of her life Iris was kept as a single elephant.
