2005-04-13: curator David Mannes attacked by Tova. David R. Mannes, 52, of Clermont, was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center at 9 p.m. Wednesday after being kicked by an elephant at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Elephant Conservation Center near Old Grade Road in Polk City. David Mannes Survived. "He is getting treatment for his injuries. He has a fractured pelvis and a soft tissue wound to his arm," said Melinda Rosser, a spokeswoman for Ringling Bros. "He is in good spirits. We have been told he will make a full recovery."

Started working at Houser’s Grove and Zoo, present Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida.

“At one point we had 21 big cats. We have five bears. We had an elephant,” said David Mannes, who started working there in 1972 at 19.

After an accident with elephant Tova when working as elephant handler at RBBB, he became curator at Brevard Zoo.

Bruce Read, vice president of animal stewardship for the center, said the accident occurred when Tova, a 36-year-old female Asian elephant, wanted some bread Mannes was feeding to Lutzi, a 50-year-old female elephant who was next to Tova.
