Married to Chiara Medini-Gärtner, who was killed by one of the elephants in 1982. In his second marriage Josef became father to Silvia Gärtner, Claudio Gärtner, Joy Gärtner, Christian Gärtner, Alex Gärtner and Sonny Gärtner.
