1978/1979: 25 young elephants caught in Kruger park, SA. Delfts also exported rhinos this year to Tierpark Schloß Krechting in Germany.

1979: sold 12 calves for $64,000 to to naturalist and businessman Frank Hart, who founded Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon, among them were; Moshi, Nanda (Nandy), Tanga,

1985: 15 young elephants captured during cull by MEFT in Etosha NP. No record of where these elephants went?


In 1990 and 1991, elephant calves originating from the Kruger National Park (from an elephant cull there) were imported into Namibia by a game dealer, the late Mr Delfs, for the purpose of re-export. Although most of the elephants were re-exported over a period of four years, four were sold within Namibia to two farms, Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve and Ovita Game Farm in Ongombeanavista. The Kuzikus elephants were subsequently sold to Du Preez Wild, and placed on Tweekoppies Farm, where in 2010 permission was granted by the MEFT to destroy them, as they could not be contained within the farm. One of the elephants on Ongombeanavista died in 1993, and the other was re-exported to The Elephant Sanctuary in South Africa.

An Overview of Elephant Conservation and Management in Namibia

1991:
  • Imported on 28th May 1991; 23 young elephants captured in Kruger NP, South Africa to Namibia.
  • The same year 2 elephants were reexported to South Africa.

    1992:
  • One elephant; unknown name died in captivity.
  • Same year re-export of 6 elephants to Japan. (possibly Taro and Hanako)

    1993:
  • 2 elephants on Re-export to Argentina. Kuky/Kuki and Pupy
  • Same year 2 elephants on Re-export Germany (Dresden Zoo; Gustl and Drumbo).
  • Another 2 male elephants sold and translocated inside Namibia to Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve (subsequently sold to Du Preez Wild in 2001).
  • Another 2 males sold and translocated to Ovita Game Farm in Ongombeanavista, in 1999 to German boomaker Nesnidal from Bremen, for elephant back safaris, one died in Ongombeanavista, and the other one was reexported to South Africa in 2004.

    1994: 4 elephants on Re-export to United Kingdom.

    1995: one elephant on Re-export to Germany. (Possibly Tembo/Franzi in Augsburg Zoo in Germany, later Carbaceno in Spain?)
