In February 2005, Bentley Brothers Circus sold their two elephants, Bertie Mae and Valerie, to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. During their time at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Joyce and Valerie were transferred to Riddle'e Elephant Sanctuary for a short breeding loan. Despite observed matings, neither elephant returned pregnant. In August 2009, Joyce was sent to the Chicago as a companion to the Brookfield Zoo's loan African female elephant Christy, after the death of Affie three months previous. During the introduction period between the two elephants, Joyce also made the transition from free to Protected Contact as per the philosophy of the Brookfield Zoo. Valerie is a female African elephant. She was born in 1982 in Africa. She came to Discovery Kingdom in 2005 with her buddy Bertie Mae. Valerie is one of our smarter elephants.
