For the majority of her life, Joni was kept as a single elephant. She spent nearly two years on a loan to the Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina until returning to her original location. Six months later the first attempt to provide a companion animal was made when Brittanie was purchased from the Carson & Barnes Circus. After behavioral issues between the two failed to resolve, Brittanie was transferred to the Milwaukee Zoo. In 2006, the zoo tried again to acquire another elephant and Ladybird was transferred from the Lion Country Safari in Florida. 2014-06-16: oni (Joy), a beloved 44-year-old African elephant at the Greenville Zoo, died while en route to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo which was to have been her new home, zoo officials said Sunday.
