2000: "Ely was born crippled and could not stand until five days after his birth. In 2000 he left the herd, most likely to Tanzania." 2000: "Then much earlier than usual, Ely and his good friend and cousin, Esau left by the end of 2000. The average age of independence for males is 14. Ely and Esau were only 10 years old. By the end of 2002 Erwin, left behind, decided to join the roving young males. He was only 11 years old. We saw them from time to time after they left but now they seem to have moved far away probably into Tanzania where they're hanging out with the big guys." 2009: "Much later, Ely would become “infamous” in the project again – he disappeared a few years after becoming independent and was assumed dead, only to rock up nine years later; tall, handsome and totally bemused by the hysterical joy he caused amongst the field team."
