Pedigree

Monty was the first African elephant born in captivity in Mexico. La Pastora previously had two calves; the first lived for ten days while the second only lived for three days. Monty weighed 90 kilograms at birth. He and his mother were kept separate from the zoo's breeding male, Pancho. He was named via a "Name the Baby" contest distributed to the children of Monterrey.
