Toto was born wild at Tanzania unspecified location, captured 1908 . and imported 1910 by Firma Carl Hagenbeck


Comments / pictures

1908-04-21: Captured by Hans Schomburgk in German Tanganyika, after he shot the mother. Schomburgk bottle fed him with milk the first six months, named him Jumbo, and and then walked with him to Morogoro, from where they travelled with train to Dar Es Salaam. He was later sold in 1910 to Christoph Schulz, Carl Hagenbecks agent, who sold him to Firma Carl Hagenbeck, and had him transported to Hamburg in Germany.
1910 November: Arrived Rome Zoo from German Tanganyika.
1922: During a veterinary session for a shoulder problem, he killed his Veterinarian Dr. Canezza.
1928-07-02: Killed the elephant keeper Ivo Calavalle

1939: Found sudden death in sleeping position, in the spring of 1939.

Skeleton is conserved in the Civic Museum of Zoology.
