Maybelle was born wild 1960 at Tanzania unspecified location, captured 1962 .
Before her arrival at the zoo in 1962, she appeared in a John Wayne movie. Maybelle died seven weeks after another San Franciso elephant, Callee, was euthanzied. She was found during morning inspections by keepers lying on her chest, legs splayed, in the outdoor exhibit. Efforts to raise the animal to her Feet with a crane failed. She subsequently died. Her death left the zoo with two elephants - Tinkerbelle and Lulu.
