The first elephants arriving in Italy during post-roman time was two elephants en route to Germany; Charlemagnes elephant Abul-Abbas, arriving in Aachen in 802. The second elephant is refered to as The Cremona elephant arriving in 1229. Both those elephants were walked through Italy on their way to their end destination.

One of the first post-roman elephants residing in Italy was Hanno (Annone) a gift to Pope Leo X from Emanuel I, King of Portugal in 1515.
