1909-04-09: assistant elephant keeper Charles Bartlow fatal attack by Tom-Tom. Seized Bellow, who had been with the circus for five years, hurled him high into the air and then trampled him to death. Charles Bartlow Thrown in Air and Body Beaten to Pulp

Charles Bartlow, assistant elephant keeper, killed by elephant at Ingersoll Park, Des Moines, IA, winter quarters of Yankee Robinson Circus. Had been with the circus for five years. Coroners inquest into his death determined that his real name was Frank Bartlow. Born 1858 in Oskaloosa. He had an FB tattoo on his left arm and had visited his cousin in Oskaloosa in 1904, on his way to join the Yankee Robinson Circus. She (the cousin) was a witness at the inquest and had pictures that were nearly identical to ones in Frank's possession.

The Globe reported that "Tom," an elephant in the winter quarters of the Yankee Robinson circus in Des Moines, Iowa, ran amuck, and seizing his keeper, a Charles Bellow, hurled him high into the air and then trampled him to death. The excited beast then ran through the animal park, uprooted small trees, destroyed three circus wagons and demolished a bridge across a lagoon. Forty bullets were shot into the elephant before it was subdued.
