Biography details
Francis Louis Guillaume , circus director in
Italy
Born 1771 in
France

.
From a wealthy family, during the Revolution of 1789 his father was shot in a real massacre of 400-500 people. It is said that he fled with his first wife Maddalena and took refuge in Nice. He was in a hotel when a small equestrian company passed by, where there was a certain Pellé. He bought it and suddenly became the director of an equestrian company. With it he travelled almost all over Europe. He was in Italy, Germany, Poland and Russia.
Once in Italy, the Guillaumes set up their own circus which was very successful also with Prince Eugene Beauharnais, King Joachim Murat, Queen Caroline of Naples so much so that it was called the Grand Equestrian Circus Guillaume.
In 1817 Francesco Luigi settled in Brescia. He married Marianna Casali in Parma on 10 June 1808 who gave him Luigi. After his wife's death he married Lucia Maj (son of Giulio and Teresa Gorno, born in Travagliato on 1 March 1808). After eleven years of inactivity in 1828, with his eldest son Luigi he joined forces with Alessandro Guerra, known as "il Furioso", and left for new performances and shows. Shortly after returning to Brescia, he formed a new company that lasted until 1832. In this year his sons split up, forming two new companies, one of which was led by Giovanni (died in Naples in 1896) and Davide, the other by Luigi.
