Biography details

Luigi Guillaume , circus director in Italy

Born 1807-05-22 in Italy dead 1883-09-10 in Italy , son of director Francis Guillaume and director Marianna Casali .

The family Guillaume settled in Brescia in 1817, when it is known that Francesco Luigi Guillaume resided in his own home in the city.

Before following his father's art, he was in the Seminary until his tonsure (7 November 1822). In 1828, with his father, already a renowned circus director, and with Alessandro Guerra the "Furioso" he formed a circus company in Brescia, where he had been since 1817. Shortly after, the Guillaume father and son formed their own company which wandered around Europe until 1832, when, returning to Brescia, Luigi set up his own company, while his brothers Giovanni and Davide formed another. In 1850 in Brescia, on the former monastery of S. Maria Maddalena, "on his own initiative, with his own strength alone, without subsidies, either public or private, he erected a theatre in which he imitated the Olympic circus in Paris, with a large arena to which a stage was added, which he then restored with great sacrifice". He first married the horsewoman Annetta Depuy or Depuis and, in his second marriage, Emilia Chavès; he had several children: Emilio (v.), Natale (v.), Carolina (b. in Brescia on 10 April 1840), Alessandro (b. in Rio de Janeiro on 7 July 1850, died in Brescia, houses of S. Polo, on 30 October 1896), Paolina (b. in Padua on 24 November 1854), Maria (b. in Brescia on 12 September 1857), Luigi (b. in Brescia on 8 November 1858), Vittorio (b. in Brescia on 21 October 1859), Natale (b. in Arezzo on 25 November 1838 - died in Buenos Aires on 20 October 1881), Luigia, Emilia etc. Legend created a love affair around him. Widowed by his first wife, Guillaume married a countess he met during a tour in Sweden. Forced to flee Sweden, the two landed in Italy, in Turin, where they found protection in the young king Vittorio Emanuele II, who he then hosted in his villa in Calcinatello in 1859.

In 1844 Miss Baba was part of the show of the Cirque Olympique in Paris presented by the company of Luigi Guillaume.

By 1851 the theater bearing the family name was used almost exclusively for their performances, this was something unique in Italy. No other circus family had this privilege.
