Henry Schroer , circus animal trainer in United States

Born 1948 in Germany in New Zealand , son of ringmaster Hans Schröer and animal trainer Jeanette Schröer .


The Chipperfield elephants where working during the season with a trainer called Charlie Weiser, he worked for Trolle Rodin and when we left he was working in Poland somewhere. We arrived in Bremerhaven by rail in the port, the tracks where about 500 meter away from the Ship, Container Ship "Atlantic Saga", a Swedish container line. Charlie arrived with the Chipperfield Elephants, no hay in the cars and who knows when the last time the saw water. He just walked over to Gunther and said : Hi, here are the rest of your Animals you taken with you" and then he baggerd of. There wasn't any water around so first thing we did was carried some over from the ship and also hay. The started to fight over the water and then when we put the hay in the real fight broke out. We had not even any names so that gave us a lot of confidence. Ones we had our animals on the boat we took the other ones out of the cars and walked with them for about 30 minutes and lucky for us the lined up by them self in the right order.
Then we find out that we had a guy on horses that had worked with these elephants in Poland in a previous year so at least we learnt a little bit about them like names etc. Because they liked to fight for there food we split them up in the lineup and since the where not hungry anymore it all went well.

Henry SchroerMy act with the Barum Elephants 1979/80. Before I arrived on the show the Elephants where hobbled between their legs because the liked to take off on the walk to and from the train. I called it the chain gang and got rid of it right from the beginning.
