  1. 2002-11-18: elephant keeper Michael Gatti fatal attack by Moja. Two zoo keepers were taking the elephant and her calf on a routine walk through the Zoo grounds this morning, when the mother suddenly stopped. Gatti told the elephant to keep moving. But she knocked him to the ground with her head and then pinned him. † Michael Gatti Died 2002-11-18, Pittsburgh Zoo. He had worked as an elephant handler for the Pittsburgh Zoo for the past five years, prior to that he had worked at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, and the Bronx Zoo in New York.

Comments / picturesPhilanthropist Christopher Lyman Magee donated $125,000 for the construction of a zoological garden in Pittsburgh\'s Highland Park neighborhood. On June 14, 1898, the Pittsburgh Zoo opened its gates to the public.

2017: Pittsburgh Zoo decided to step away from their AZA accreditation in order to remain Free Contact with their elephants.
