Comments / picturesIn the early 20th century, Dang Nang Longs grandfather moved from the central coastal region to the highlands. He tamed dozens of elephants and supplied some for King Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam. Long’s father, Dang Nang Nhay, followed this job, and of Nhay’s 11 children, only Dang Nang Long continues taming elephants.

2011: On July 8, Huy together with Dung and Y Bia H’Wing, who got a jail terms of 15 months and didn’t submit an appeal, pulled out 200 tail hairs from the elephant of Y Per Eung, also in Lak District, and sold them for VND6 million ($291). At the first trial Huy and Noi were also ordered to pay Long VND35 million ($1,700) in compensation.

2012: Dang Van Long, the man who owns four male and five female elephants in Lak district, said that he has been trying every way to help elephants reproduce since 2009, but he has failed.
