The animal was imprisoned inside a room of a large house within the 22-acre Bangewatte estate owned by Deputy Chairman Sumedha Basnayake, said Upali Padmasiri, assistant director and officer in charge of the wildlife department’s crime squad. Padmasiri said Basnayake was abroad at the time the detection was made, adding that the main suspect was his father-in-law Richard Gonakumbura.
