Comments / pictures

Wankie, Tatima and Dunda were imported together from Zimbabe to the San Diego Wild Animal Park in September 1971. In 2003, the Wild Animal Park loaned their older African elephants to other locations for the importation of 11 new elephants captured in Swaziland, in collaboration with Lowry Park Zoo which received 4 of these animals. Peaches, Wankie and Tatima were transported in April 2003 to the Lincoln Park Zoo, while Chico was transported to the Caldwell Zoo in Texas. The three cows died within eight months of each other during their time in Chicago. Preliminary findings indicated Tatima likely experienced complications from mycobacteriosis, or tuberculosis, which likely affected her joints and internal organs, according to the zoo. "Tatima could have been exposed to Tuberculosis up to 30 years ago, zoo officials said. However, she showed no signs of the disease, such as lethargy or nasal discharge, and tested negative in June."
