During their time at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Joyce and Valerie were transferred to Riddle'e Elephant Sanctuary for a four month breeding loan. Neither elephant returned pregnant. In August 2009, Joyce was loaned to Chicago as a companion to the Brookfield Zoo's lone female African elephant Christy, after the death of Affie three months previous. During the introduction period between the two elephants, Joyce also made the transition from free to protected contact as per the philosophy of the Brookfield Zoo. Christy died four months later, leaving Joyce alone and the Brookfield Zoo without elephants of its own for the first time in its 75 year history. Joyce measures nearly eight Feet tall at the shoulder and weighs roughly 6800 pounds. "Joyce is a female African elephant. She was born in 1983 in Zimbabwe, Africa.
