1935-08-04: Two months previously while working in harness with the Barnes Show, he had suddenly attacked and killed the "hook-up" man Jessie Wardlow and on July 9 both "Vance" and another male "Tommy" were shipped by baggage car from the show to Peru.

The body of Jesse Wardlow, killed by a fractious elephant while the Al G. Barnes circus was here last week, was shipped Friday morning to Denver, Colorado, where a sister of the deceased resides. All arrangements for the preparing and shipping the body were handled by a Mr. Culp, legal adjuster with the show. All expenses were paid at this end by the circus management, presumably out of a fund maintained for such emergencies. There was no haggling over costs and the matter was handled with the same smoothness that characterized the conducting of the show.

Vance, the elephant that did the killing, was one of the largest in the Herd, and is said to weigh close to six tons. Different stories are in circulation as to how the fatality happened. One is that this particular “bull man,” as the elephant hand is known, was abusing the animal and that the monstrous pachyderm turned on him, knocking him down and stepping on his head. During the afternoon and evening shows Vance was noticed chained at a distance from the rest of the Herd. He appeared surly, and was swaying his huge body and swinging his massive head and Trunk like the pendulum of a clock.
