Philip Peter Jacob Wirth , circus director in Australia Born 1864-06-29 in Australia dead 1937-08-29 in Australia , son of artist John Wirth and other Sarah Phillips . About 1881 the brothers joined Ashton's Circus as Wirth's Tourist Band. Next year they set up their own troupe, Wirths Circus. The deaths of John junior in 1894 and Harry in 1895 left control to Philip and George, and their sister Marizles. Philip married Sarah Jane Hodgson (d.1929) at St Marys Church, Parnell, Auckland. Philip was a Freemason and a member of the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales. On 5 March 1929 he married Alice Maud Willis at St Aidan's Church, Berrigan, New South Wales. They had six children: Eileen, Doris, Madelaine, Phillip, George and Marizles, the youngest. Eileen had the elephants, Doris the statues and the Golden Horse, Madelaine the lions and the bears, and Philip the monkeys and the dogs. Marizles, being "rather a shy person", according to her cousin Clive Whitrow, decided her future lay in administration. Survived by his wife, their five daughters and two sons, and by a daughter of his first marriage, he died at his Coogee home on 29 August 1937 and was buried in the Anglican section of North Adelaide cemetery.
