Nancy Ellie Le Souef , zoo assistant director in Australia Born 1908-01-12 in Australia dead ? in Australia , daughter of director Ernest Albert Le Souef . 1938: In December 1938, Mildred was in Java and travelled to Buitenzong in the New Year, returning to Perth in February 1939. During this time, she sent descriptive letters to her family and received letters from her sister, Nancy, who mentioned a Pet Parade at the zoo (4370A/554) 1941: Mildred, Nancy and their mother still living in the Zoo House, Mildred teaching at Wesley College, salary 200 pounds per year. 1943. Diary notes that all details are in her first 5 year diary, 1943-1947. 41 vol.s 1953-1957: Mildred and Bernard lived at 46 Onslow Street, South Perth. Nancy, her sister, lived with them and worked at the Zoo entrance – Mildred continued to teach at Wesley College – Bernard taught singing and did work for the ABC.
In 1962 two female Asiatic elephant calves arrived. They were named Tricia and Tania in a newspaper competition. In 1967 Nancy Le Souef, daughter of the first Director, retired after spending her whole working life and her childhood at the Zoo. Nancy has some interesting memories of the Zoo as a child. When Jumbaroo, an Asiatic elephant, was delivered he came by ferry to the Mends St Jetty and was enticed through the streets to the Zoo by being offered bananas.
