United Kingdom
. Mander's Menagerie closed down in 1871.
Comments / pictures
Mander\'s Menagerie was established by
William Manders
, a former employee at Hilton Menagerie, one of the largest menageries in the country at the time and fierce rival of Womwells.
William Manders
was a very accomplished spieler, who made a name for himself in the sector and eventually bought his employers business, turning it into ‘Mander’s Grand National Star Menagerie’ in 1850. Manders travelled his menagerie until 1871 and during this period he became one of the main exhibitors of live animals and toured the UK and America.
William Manders died in 1871 and his menagerie was sold at auctioned at the Agricultural Hall. His widow
Rosina Manders
and the Manders family however, continued to travel the British fairgrounds presenting rides and the name Manders is still present in the British fairground in the twenty first century.
