Casualties

2 casualties
  1. 1983-06-05: elephant keeper Toby Styles attacked by Tantor. tucked his Trunk under and put his Ears out and charged like a great big truck. Toby Styles Survived. Styles escaped the attack. In most cases what you do is charge them back – it’s just like a big bluff. But he started to come at me and I knew this was the time to get the hell out of there. I didn’t know I could still move that fast.Toby Styles
  2. 1993-10-07: elephant keeper Nick Rensink attacked by Iringa. That morning, Rensinck, more than 18 months experience with the Zoo's elephants, attempted to end a disagreement between Thika and Iringa. When he tried to force Iringa back, she threw him across the holding area with her Trunk and gored him repeatedly in the leg while he was pinned on his back. Nick Rensink Survived. Rensinck might have been killed if not Keeper Mark Bongelli, was able to step into the pen, back the elephant away from Nick and have Nick crawl partially out of the accident area. Mark then pulled Nick through the adjacent pen, past two other elephants to a central area, and called for assistance.

Comments / pictures1974: Born in Mozambique circa 1969, the zoo’s initial trio of elephants spent time in Europe before they travelled via ocean liner from Hamburg to Toronto.
