Culling: [see also: poaching] (Hanks 1979:17,15,39-67,155,157,164; Spinage 1990:1,5; Gavron 1993:131-132,134-135,192-193; Hall-Martin 2000) The legal killing of excess animals in a population; used as a management tool by vildlife officials. With elephants, the usual aim is for entire family units to be removed at once.
