Important message: CNN claim, in an article written by CNN journalists Kay Jones and Hollie Silvermanthe on August 3, 2020 on the website of CNN.com the following: There are less than 3,500 Asian elephants left in the wild and they face extinction because of ivory poaching and habitat destruction, the zoo statement said..in the article Baby elephant dies 27 days after his birth at St. Louis Zoo, but the article doesnt really state why ivory poaching should be an immediate threat to Asian elephants, and their claims of the world population of Asian elephants, is however also something to doubt.. Although IUCN seems to have forgotten to state the world population of Asian elephants at Their fact sheet about the Asian elephant, while the Asian Elephant Specialist Group state that there are elephants in 13 range states, but AESG seemingly also forgot to mention how many Asian elephants there are today, and on their website https://www.asesg.org it is also not easy to find a record about the world population of Asian elephants, but International Elephant Foundation state on the page Elephas maximus: Endangered due to loss of habitat. Numbers are currently around 30,000 – 50,000 (one-tenth of the population of African elephants, and no mention about ivory hunting in Asia), which is a number far, or rather more than ten times higher than the claim from cnn.com =There are NOT less than 3,500 Asian elephants left in the wild, as cnn claim.//Dan Koehl

The elephant database

Elephant information and database since 1995

Welcome to www.elephant.se and The Elephant Database. owned and managed by elephant consultant Dan Koehl. (ORCID Wikipedia article)

With 25 years online, this is the oldest and largest online elephant database in the world and also possibly the largest database of animal individuals. Updated almost daily it presently presents Notice: Undefined index: id in /customers/6/2/a/elephant.se/httpd.www/inc/start_page.inc.php on line 33 8662 captive living elephants , and each of the 2981 location facilities from 123 countries in 6 continent regions, as a neutral unbiased documentation. Above you can either search for an elephants name, a location name or for a certain country. You can also use the navigation links on top, on "database" you can choose births and deaths for any given year 1880-today from the list of 6851 dead elephants from both species..

Click on a country to see overview of statistical number and the category of different locations within the country

When you click on a location: four different category tabs let you choose how much, and what you want to see: (the tabs also show how many individuals are within each category) Location info contains basic records and history about a location, present give an overview over the elephants living on the location now, births list the elephants which was born on the location, deaths the one that died there, and total gives a full-length list of all elephants which was ever at the location.

Elephants with unknown present or death location, origin, birth or previous location, are listed on the fictional location unknown location, while possible duplicates (two different records elephants who may be the same elephant) are listed at possible duplicates?. If you have any information regarding those elephants, please contact us.

Click on every elephant to see the individual presentaton with history on present and past locations, and see eventual existing and documented parentage and offspring. each individual has a number in the database, each location also, and the number one; Sebas pickled elephant (https://www.elephant.se/database2.php?elephant_id=1) was the first description of an Asian elephant by Carl Linnaeus, although later research with DNA, confirmed its actually an African elephant, today located at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (https://www.elephant.se/location2.php?location_id=2986).

There are also a number of sections with different data sorts, like regional studbooks and breeding, transfer and relocations of elephants, births and deaths, disease and longevity, and year lists from 1880-today. You can also see the list of elephants with submitted documented birth weights, elephants with submitted documented body weights elephants with submitted documented body heights, list of elephant mankillers, list of elephant names, summarize and graphical statistics and the latest changes in the elephant database.
