May was born wild 1928.
Born in East Sri Lanka, May lived her entire life at the San Francisco Zoo until her death in 1980 at 52 years old. In 1975, May was anesthetized by a Group of 12 veterinarians and treated for foot rot. She was then fitted with cowhide moccasins, laced together with steel cable with a three-layer nonskid rubber sole and lined with sterilized cotton soaked in an antiseptic solution. Each 13-pound shoe cost the country $400 altogether.
