1960: Packy was bred at Morgan Berry. His parents were wild Asian elephants that had been imported by Howard Morgan Berry. Thonglaw, the father, came from Cambodia, and Belle, the mother, was purchased in Thailand in the early 1950s when she was just a month old. 1962: Packy put Portland on the map in 1962 when he made international news for being the first elephant born in the Western Hemisphere in over 44 years. 2013: infected with Tuberculosis. 2017-02-09: Dead. Packy, who made headlines during the Kennedy era as the first elephant born in the Western Hemisphere in 44 years, was humanely euthanized at the Oregon Zoo today. At nearly 55, he was the oldest male of his Species in North America. Two of his offspring, Rama and Sung-Surin, still lived with him at the zoo, by his death.
