Tanya's arrival to the Caldwell Zoo in December 1988 began the first step in the St. Louis Zoo's Asian elephant breeding program. She originally arrived in St. Louis in 1984 when the zoo agreed to take her after a failed sale from an animal auction in Cape Girardeau. She was kept as a single elephant and performed a single act in the zoo's Elephant Show, preceding the five act of Asian elephants.
