Startled by a passing car, a 6,400-pound elephant, Carol, stumbled while being led to a circus appearance and fell on her handler, who was crushed to death as the animal struggled to get back on her feet. David Dickerson, a lifelong circus worker, died by the time the rescue helicopter reached the hospital.

Carol, the 39-year-old Asian elephant struck by a bullet in a drive-by shooting early Tuesday morning in Tupelo, MS where they are appearing with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Gold Unit.

2013-04-10: When the bullet entered Carol's neck just above the shoulder, part of the bullet broke up into fragments. Carol will make a full recovery. She is in good spirits and being well taken care of. She is enjoying every meal as usual. She will be under the expert veterinary care of Doctor Dennis Schmidt for at least the next couple months.Catherine Carden
