Hans was born wild 1916.

In 1944, a news article described Hermann Park zoo elephant Hans as one of the largest bulls in captivity. For several years preceding, he was responsible for injuring several zoo workers. After the death of exhibit mate Nellie in 1943, it was reported that Hans developed a diminished diet, only consuming a bale of hay per day.
