Comments / pictures

In 2000, the Henry Vilas Zoo made the decision to close their elephant exhibit and relocate their two elephants, Winkie and Penny, upon recommendation by the United States Department of Agriculture that the exhibit either be improved or elephants removed. Winkie was retired to Carol Buckley's private facility and Penny was transferred to the Riverbanks Zoo newly renovated $4 million exhibit for African elephants. She was temorarily housed at the Columbus Zoo with two other elephants slated for arrival at the South Carolina zoo.

Belle and Belinda spent 13 years together at the Columbus Zoo before their transfer to the Riverbanks Zoo in December 2001. Penny arrived at the zoo in August 2000, and was transferred to Riverbanks in the Group as well.

Penny was transitioned to a Protected Contact working environment while at the Columbus Zoo in accordance with the Riverbanks Zoo's management protocol.

2017-05-04: 37-year-old Penny was humanely euthanized on Thursday, May 4 after she fell on exhibit and was unable to stand.
