Comments / pictures

In Feburary 1974, the first 17 elephants arrived at Circus World from Venice - Anna May, Peggy, Rose, Manja, Rebecca, Gilda, Carmen, Mudu, Zina, Tagu, Minyak, Mala, Sophie, Barbara, Babe, Josky and Hope.
In 1979, the Ringling Brothers presented the Blue Unit with the "Minyak Five" (Minyak, Mala, Barbara, Josky and Sophie) and the the "Center Ring Five" (Carmen, Zina, Peggy, Hugo and Gilda).
In 1986, the Ringling Brothers presented the Blue Unit with Siam, India, Calcutta, Jewel, Lucy, Betty, Rani, Suzanne, Jenny, Targa, Kernaudi, Roma, Putsie, Karen, Carmen, Sophie, Bonnie, Nicole, Icky and Alana (in order of seniority).
In November 2002, Kathy Sh-Boom was the oldest known captive elephant to have died from the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes virus, 30 months after Babe's arrival at the age of 40. After Kathy's death, Ringling donated another elephant to Niabi Zoo in March 2003, Sophie. Niabi Director Tom Stalf said it is assumed Kathy contracted the disease from Babe. Both Sophie and Babe were both later tested positive as carriers for the disease. They were selected for the RBBB's companionship program after a recommendation not to breed, due to Babe's ovarian cysts and Sophie's Arthritis.

I don't know when she came off the road but she was definitely at the CEC from 1999 until 2003 when she was given to the Naibi Zoo in Coal Valley, Ill. //Bob Cline

Contradictory records:

EEG claims she was born 1960 in an unknown country, before arrving at Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey in 1972.

2024-07-15: Sophie was diagnosed with pyometra more than seven years ago. Most elephants survive less than a year with the condition. In a show of strength and defiance, Sophie survived far longer than her average counterparts.
