Comments / pictures

1939-08-06: At a bend in the road one of the tractor trailers carrying five employees and two performing elephants named Rubber and Elsie suddenly veered off, nicked a utility pole then hurtled a ten-ft creek before slamming head-on into the opposite bank. The force of the crash demolished the front of the truck cab, instantly killing 16-year-old Rubber, as well as a trainer, a 45-year-old Kansas City man named John Blair, who was caught between the cab and the two-ton pachyderm when she was thrown into him. Four other men in the cab were taken to Kings Daughter’s Hospital with minor injuries.
