Comments / pictures

Randy was a popular elephant who appeared in the movie "The Boy Who Became a Star" and on animal TV shows, and was loved by many people both inside and outside the prefecture. The cause of death was cardiac arrest due to circulatory failure, and she was estimated to have been 45 years old.

According to the zoo, in 2014, Randy was found to have a vertical split in the nail on his front paw. Since then, he had been undergoing nail care under the guidance of a veterinarian, but he had a fall in December last year, which made it difficult for him to walk. Although his condition improved somewhat with treatment, he was unable to stand on February 24th this year, and by the 25th was lying down. His own weight had put a strain on his internal organs, and it was confirmed that he died of cardiac arrest due to circulatory failure in the afternoon of the same day.

The elephant was based on a non-fiction book by the zoo's director, Sayuri Sakamoto, titled "Little Elephant Randy and the Boy Who Became a Star," and became famous when he appeared in the film "The Boy Who Became a Star" released in 2005. He entertained visitors to the zoo by appearing in shows until December 6th of last year.
