Gajendra was born wild at Nagarhole National Park, captured 1987 , captured at 1430.
Gajendra was a prominent figure in the festival for nearly two decades, known for his majestic build and gentle nature. Captured in 1987 in the Kattepura forest of Kodagu, he was considered one of the most capable elephants and even practiced carrying the Golden Howdah (Ambari), the lead role in the procession. He participated in the festival more than 15 times and held the prestigious title of "Pattada Aane" (Royal Elephant) for the Mysuru Royal family. He performed critical rituals at the Mysuru Palace during the 10-day celebrations, including carrying idols from the Kodi Someshwara Temple. 2015: Killed his previous Mahout Ganapatti and another elephant in 2015 2015: weight: 4700 kgs 2017: Mahout Shankar and Kavadi Sunil. The attack occurred around Sunday evening at the K. Gudi elephant camp in the Biligirirangana Hills (BRT) Tiger Reserve. Immediate Circumstances: Gajendra was in Musth (a period of heightened aggression) and began attacking another Dasara elephant named Srirama. The Fatality: Ganapathi (45–50 years old), who had handled Gajendra for nearly 20 years, was gored to death while attempting to intervene and separate the two Fighting elephants. The elephant Srirama also succumbed to his injuries shortly after, with some reports noting he died that same Sunday night and others stating he passed away on Monday, March 16, 2015. Following the attacks, Gajendra escaped into the forest and was tracked and tranquilized by a team of 60 forest officials on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. After the March 2015 incident where he killed his Mahout and fellow elephant Srirama, Gajendra was dropped from the festival lineup to ensure public safety. He spent most of the following decade in various forest camps like K. Gudi and Boodipadaga, largely kept away from the public eye and other elephants due to the risk associated with his past aggression while in Musth. Following a public social media campaign titled "Save Gajendra," Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre ordered his transfer from the Boodipadaga camp (where he had been living in isolation) to the more social environment of Mattigodu.
