Gigi was born wild 1958.
In November 1962, the Taronga Zoo purchased two elephants, Gigi and Gilda, from Singapore. Six years later in November 1968, the same pair and a giraffe were sold to Ashton's Circus. Alfons Arndt had been their trainer at the zoo; when the circus acquired them, Captain Fritz Schultz picked up the animals and drove them to the show while it was playing in Adelaide. He added some additional training to the animals. Gilda died of posoining on the show. For several decades, the Asthon's Circus exhibited three elephants, Abu, Gigi and Tanya. Tanya died shortly after Abu. Leaving Gigi a single elephant, the Ashtons transferred her to Stardust Circus whom also had a single elephant, Arna. Arna and Gigi were both donated to the Western Plains Zoo in January 2008 from the Stardust Circus after Arna crushed her 54 year old handler at the Yamba Showground on the NSW North Coast.
