A male elephant named Kwaite died on July 27 in his 50s, according to the Mondulkiri Project, an elephant sanctuary situated in the Eastern part of Cambodia.
"We are all close to tears and heartbroken. His health deteriorated quickly,” Mondulkiri Project wrote on a Facebook post, adding the cause of his subsequent death was due to old age.
Kwaite had been relocated to the sanctuary in March due to financial difficulties faced by his owner. Before his time at the sanctuary, he had served as a means of transport, including carrying heavy weapons during the Khmer Rouge Regime and later being used in the logging industry.
