As of 1982, there were eight elephants in captivity at Gangala-na-Bodio, Garamba National Park, northeast Zaire (formerly the Belgian Congo). All were female Loxodonta africana cyclotis ("Domina," "Kiko," "Kumba," "Lukutu," "Lwiro," "Nakoto," "Wando," "Zombi"). The only male ("Doly") died in June 1979.
