Ghopalan described the animlas endearing qualities to Conservator of Forests as follows: Elephant Phyllis ... is reckoned to have completed 56 years of age. Now she is declining in health and is found untit for dragging timber. She is very fond of little elephant calves, whenever there had been births of elephant calves in captivity. In vicw of the services rendered by her during the last forty-nine years. it will be better that now in her old age. she is pensioned off, just as Eva, Ranger and Peri were previously pensioned off. allowed maintenancc ration and looked after by only one attendant till their end. Or as a measurc of economy. she may be transferred to Nilgiri Division. and tried solely for the joy riding for visitors in Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary Nilgiri Division. and tried solely for the joy riding for visitors in Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary.... Unhappily the story ends with the footnote hidden in the annual report of 1955: Phvllis was sold in Nilambur for Rs. 1100.
