In 1921, the fossil of the largest mammoth in the world was found north of Curtis, Nebraska. A farmer’s wife noticed their chickens were pecking at something white in the hillside. As the hill eroded, the white in the hillside was revealed to be the fossil remains of a large mammoth.

The fossil remains of the mammoth are on display at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in Morrill Hall. The mammoth is nicknamed “Archie.”

“Because of this fossil mammoth find, it became the state fossil,” said Jim Griffin, Curator Director of the Lincoln County Historical Museum. “The official state fossil is the mammoth because of Archie and a Lincoln county farmer.”

In his initial reports, Barbour declared the Kariger mammoth a new species, Elephas maibeni. The name also honored museum donor Hector Maiben. A 1936 monograph by Osborn redescribed it as Archidiskodon imperator — generating the mammoth mascot’s Archie nickname. Archidiskodon has since been added to the Mammuthus columbi — Columbian mammoth — species, which ranged through the western United States and Central America during the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 million to 11,700 years ago).
