Known as the Land of a Million Elephants, herds suffer hunting and habitat loss from logging, agriculture and hydroelectric projects. Lack of funds hampers conservation.

1989: Laos banned the hunting and killing of endangered species including elephants.
2004: Laos joined the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
2010: It was estimated (government estimates 2010) 600 wild and only 480 domesticated elephants left in the country. (earlier 780-1200 (Sukumar), earlier 200-500 (Santiapillai, IUCN1996))

Captive population


Captive elephants are viewed as livestock and are managed by the national Department of Livestock and Fisheries
