Abelardo Moreno, one of Cuba's most important ornithologists and conservationists, was born on February 13, 1913, in the former province of Las Villas. Abelardo Moreno died in May 1992 at the age of 79 years. Biologist and university professor . He graduated as a Doctor of Natural Sciences from the University of Havana at the age of twenty-one. He dedicated part of his life to the collection of snails and spiders, among which he discovered a new Species of snails, which was named in his honor. He was one of the creators of the Cuban Academy of Sciences in 1962, and until his retirement he dedicated himself entirely to his work, especially to its Scientific Council , the National Aquarium of Cuba , the Havana Zoo and the conception and construction of the Parque National Zoo. His valuable contributions and dedication to science in Cuba were well recognized through the many honors and distinctions conferred by the University of Havana, the Academy of Sciences, other cultural and scientific institutions, and by the Cuban State.
