Description
Berelyokh mass accumulation,
Russia
.
Comments / pictures
The Byoryolyokh (Russian: Бёрёлёх, Yakut: Бөрөлөөх) is a river in Yakutia in Russia. It flows into the Russko-Ustyinskaya, a left distributary of the Indigirka. By the Byoryolyokh more than 8,000 bones from at least 140 woolly mammoths have been found in a single spot, apparently having been swept there by the current.
The concentration of bones in the Berelyokh mass accumulation was likely result from the simultaneous deaths of a large number of animals within herd-family groups in one or several seasons. The formation of this mass accumulation is argued to be a direct consequence of short but strong climatic warming (Bølling oscillation) and associated unfavorable environmental conditions
