Description

Albertus Seba, in Amsterdam, Netherlands , was founded in 1665. Albertus Seba closed down in 1736.

Comments / picturesDutch pharmacist, zoologist and collector. Seba accumulated one of the largest cabinets of curiosities in the Netherlands during his time. He sold one of his cabinets in 1717 to Peter the Great of Russia. His later collections, incuding an elephant baby pickled in Alcohol, were auctioned after his death, and was bought by the king of Sweden, who gave it to Carl Linnaeus.

This specimen was the first elephant Carl Linnaeus described, however being an African elephant, Carl Linnaeus described it as Elephas maximus, Asian elephant.
