The history of Circus Corty & Althoff began with Pierre Corty. The Cortys were a family of artists who traveled all over Europe without producing stars up to that point. Pierre began his career in the French State Circus of Louis Dejean . It was there that he met Dejean\'s daughter, Louise Dejean. The two married in 1837 against their father\'s wishes and had a daughter, Adele Corty, in 1840.

1837: Pierre Corty married 1837 Louise Dejean, daughter to Louis Dejean, director of the french state circus.
1853: This circus was founded 1853 as Circus Corty by French-German director Pierre Corty, and lasted up to the early 20s.
1866: Pierre Cortys daugther Adele Corty, was married to Dominicus Althoff 1866, and Corty let in Dominik as part owner.
1884: Circus was renamed Circus Corty-Althoff in 1884.
1887: Dominicus Althoff died.
1888: Pierre Corty died.
1888: Adele Corty-Althoff was director.

While running the circus, Adele gradually transferred more and more responsibility to her eldest son Pierre. He had been in the ring since he was 11 and soon mastered acrobatics , juggling and vaulting , performed as a musical clown and was at times considered the best trainer of his time.

1895: Pierre Adolf married Adele Rossi (sister to Alfredo Rossi who had an act with the Rossis Musical Elephants).
1901: Pierre Althoff became director of the circus.
