London Zoo, located at Regents Park Zoo, Outer Circle Regents Park, in London, United Kingdom , was founded in 1826 and the first elephant arrived in 1831. The last elephant left in 2001.
London Zoo was founded in 1826, and kept a large number of elephants, including the famous Jumbo, Jumbo II, and the six and half year old male African forest elephant Jumbo III was presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Cameroon government in December 1972. He was originally kept at The Crystal Palace, though he did much damage to his quarters. He was transferred to the London Zoo and kept at the Cotton Terraces rather than the rhino and elephant yards before his transfer to the Whipsnade Zoo. After the tragical accident when the elephant Geeta killed the elephant keeper Jim Robson in London Zoo, all the elephants were transferred to Whipsnade.
